The Significant Visit to China of Howard Kerr

In March 2010, BSI China welcomed Howard Kerr, Chief Executive of BSI Group in Beijing. Accompanied by Moyuan Liu, managing director of BSI China, Howard Kerr paid a series of government visits, witnessed very important MOU signing with government departments and hosted the BSI China annual customer dinner, all these activities make signification impacts on the future development of BSI China.

On March 1, together with Sir Sebastian Wood, UK Ambassador of China, Howard met Zhi Shuping, Deputy Minister of AQSIQ (General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine ). Mr. Zhi Shuping expressed deep gratitude to BSI for its contribution made in the past decade to the capacity building of China’s standardization as well as certification and accreditation industry.

After the meeting, Howard attended the luncheon hosted by Sun Dawei, Chief Administrator of Certification and Accreditation Administration of China (CNCA). Mr. Sun Dawei spoke highly of BSI’s leading position and deep influence in international standardization area. He believes BSI as a prestigious standards and certification body that supports the healthy development of China’s certification industry by continuing its operation in China market.

On the same day, Howard attended the signing ceremony of the MOU on low carbon products certification with Environment Development Center (EDC) of the Ministry of Environment Protection (MEP). Moyuan Liu, Managing Director of BSI China and Xia Guang, Deputy Director of EDC signed the MOU with the presence of Christopher Wood, Minister and Deputy Head of Mission of UK Embassy in Beijing.

Under the MOU, BSI would assist EDC to develop low-carbon products standards. The project aims at changing consumers’ behaviors in an effort to encourage the investments of Chinese enterprises in low carbon technology.

Howard and Liu Zhiquan, Deputy Director of the Department of Science &Technology and Standards, MEP, spoke on the occasion. Both sides agreed the project would develop into part of bilateral cooperation between China and UK in the field of developing low carbon economy.

On March 2, Howard received Li Zibin, Chairman of China Association of Small and Medium Enterprises (CASME) in BSI Beijing office.  Moyuan Liu and Sun Xiuchun, Secretary General of CASME, signed a MOU on behalf of respective organizations. The MOU will enable BSI China to provide standard-based solutions to over 130,000 CASME members nation wide.

In the evening, Howard hosted the “2010 BSI Annual Customer Dinner” in Beijing Ritan Inn House. Over 80 guests including government officials, partners and key customers were present on the occasion.

In his opening remark, Howard recalled the achievements made by BSI Group in the past year and identified challenges and key targets in the new year. 

On behalf of HMG and UK Embassy, Alastair Morgan, Director of Trade & Investment for China, said that BSI’s activities represent the skills, quality and professionalism that British companies can bring to China. He expressed full support to BSI’s operation in China market.

Liu Weijun, Chief Engineer of CNCA, paid tribute to BSI’s international standing and prestige, thanked BSI ’s assistance rendered in the past years and affirmed that CNCA would continue to cooperate with BSI in developing China’s certification and accreditation industry.

Moyuan Liu, in his concluding remarks, thanked representatives of government departments especially CNCA for its guidance and support and assured the audience that BSI China would continue to work in China and for China.

The success of all the above activities embodies the sufficient recognition and great supports of China and UK governments to BSI, shows the importance and confidence of China market, and provides very good effects of BSI China in enhancing government relationships and customer care as well. Howard’s China visit can be known as another milestone in Tiger year after the Kick Off meeting in Xi’an. We believe all these powerful supports from governments, partners, and customers will surely speed up our further success in the new year.
