
British Standards Institution (BSI) is the National Standards Body (NSB) of United Kingdom and responsible for the development and promulgation of national standards. BSI is recognized as the national member of the corresponding international and regional standards organizations such as the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), European Committee for Standardization (CEN) and European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC).
BSI relations with the government is managed by the Department for Business, Enterprise & Regulatory Reform (BERR), which build a standards and conformity assessment infrastructure and set UK Government policy on all matters relating to standards-making.
The United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) is the sole national accreditation body recognized by government to assess, against internationally agreed standards, organizations that provide certification, testing, inspection and calibration services.
The National Physical Laboratory (NPL) is the UK's National Measurement Institute (NMI) to develop and apply accurate measurement standards. Other organizations contribute specialist areas to the UK's national measurement systems are: National Engineering Laboratory (NEL) for flow measurements, Laboratory of the Government Chemist (LGC) for chemical analysis, and National Weights and Measurement Laboratory (NWML) on the enforcement of the use of standards, legal metrology.
