Title
Sampling and examination of bituminous mixtures for roads and other paved areas - Part 102: Analytical test methods

Executive summary
Analytical test methods for bituminous mixtures for roads and other paved areas.

Abstract
This part of BS 598 describes analytical test methods to be carried out under laboratory test conditions on samples of bituminous mixtures for roads and other paved areas. The test methods described in this British Standard are not applicable to mastic asphalts; methods for testing these materials are described in BS 5284. Test methods for bituminous materials made with modified binders are outside the scope of this standard. Experience has shown that use of the methods described in this standard will only provide approximate binder content for such mixtures.

This standard covers limits for the repeatability and reproducibility of samples obtained from the same bulk sample, determination of binder content and grading of mineral aggregate, determination of water content and adjustments of soluble binder content and material passing 0.063 mm test sieve found on analysis.

History and related standards
This British Standard supersedes BS 598-102:1996 which is withdrawn. It has been amended to align with BS EN 13043. Detailed guidance and advice on the changes may be found in PD 6682-2 and PD 6682-9.
