BSI welcomes approaches from those who are interested in influencing standards. Although it requires time and effort, there are many direct benefits that can be gained.
There are many opportunities for participating in the process of standardization, from the creation of Private Standards for use within a single organisation, to the development of full formal standards that serve to shape an entire industry.
Standards development is driven by representation from all those with a significant interest. Input is sought from many spheres, including:
Building a Consensus
Formal British Standards are developed by the National Standards Body through technical committees. These committees generally consist of between five and fifty people. Most of the work is carried out via the Internet, although committees do meet when necessary.
Trade associations offer a means of representing the interests of business, enabling a wide degree of consultation and support. Representation is usually made through related interest groups such as these, to ensure that the greatest possible consensus is reached. In some cases, where individuals have a particular expertise, they may be invited to contribute directly on a committee.
